What is fsae?
Formula SAE® is a student design competition organized by SAE International (formerly Society of Automotive Engineers). The competition began in 1978 and was originally called SAE Mini Indy.
Formula SAE challenges teams to design a small Formula-style race car based on a series of rules and are evaluated for its potential as a production item. The competition encompasses two main categories; static and dynamic events. The static events consist of engineering design, marketing presentations, cost and manufacturing analysis, as well as technical inspection. The dynamic events include acceleration, autocross, endurance and skid pad.
FSAE at Uoft
The University of Toronto began its involvement in FSAE in 1997, and completed a prototype vehicle in 1998. Through testing and research on the vehicle, a second lighter frame was constructed in 1999. The University continues to place well in rankings in both static and dynamic competitions.
The prototype race car is judged in a number of different events. Each event is worth a specified percentage of a team’s cumulative score and the team with the highest score at the end of the competition is crowned the winner. The points schedule for most Formula SAE events is:
Design Event 150
Cost & Manufacturing Analysis Event 100
Presentation Event 75
Acceleration Event 75
Skidpad Event 50
Autocross Event 150
Fuel Economy Event 100
Endurance Event 300
Total Points Possible 1,000
In addition to these events, various sponsors of the competition provide awards for superior design accomplishments. For example, best use of E-85 ethanol fuel, innovative use of electronics, recyclability, crash worthiness, analytical approach to design, and overall dynamic performance are some of the awards available. At the beginning of the competition, the vehicle is checked for rule compliance during the Technical Inspection. Its braking ability, rollover stability and noise levels are checked before the vehicle is allowed to compete in the dynamic events (Skidpad, Autocross, Acceleration, and Endurance).
Formula SAE encompasses all aspects of a business including research, design, manufacturing, testing, developing, marketing, management, and fund raising. Formula SAE promotes careers and excellence in engineering as it encompasses all aspects of the automotive industry including research, design, manufacturing, testing, developing, marketing, management and finances.
Today, the competition has expanded and includes a number of spin off events. In the United States there are two locations: California and Michigan; Michigan being the largest event and longest running.
